A Legacy of Generosity
Marion and her husband, JD, Nelson from Spokane, Washington, were raised with a strong foundation in the Catholic faith.
Marion attributes her commitment to global service to the example set by her father, Robert Mattos, who instilled in her that serving others is a central tenant of the faith.
“For you were called for freedom, brothers. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather, serve one another through love.” (Galatians 5:13)

When Mr. Mattos learned about the rebuilding efforts for St. Paul Chapel in Ghana, led by Fr. Peter, he was deeply moved that parishioners living in poverty were gathering under a mango tree for services, even during the rain. Marion says, “this project called out to our hearts.”
Inspired, Mr. Mattos made a lasting gift to the community, enabling them to rebuild their cherished church fully.
Marion and JD later traveled to Bowina, Ghana, to celebrate the opening of the newly rebuilt chapel alongside Fr. Peter, the local Bishop, and many parish members. Upon their return, they shared their transformative experiences from this journey with Robert, affirming the profound legacy of his generosity.
