The Roots of Bethlehem: Growing Christ’s Love Through You

Christmas brings us close to small things. A child wrapped in cloth. A manger made ready. Mary and Joseph caring for the life entrusted to them.

Jesus entered the world needing to be held, sheltered, and loved. Before the shepherds arrived or the Magi began their journey, there was this simple act of care: Mary laid her Son in the place available to her.

Luke tells us she placed Him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn (Luke 2:7). Centuries earlier, Isaiah had offered another image of a humble beginning:

“A shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse.” — Isaiah 11:1

New life rising where hope seemed unlikely.

That promise leads us into Catholic World Mission’s Beyond Bethlehem Christmas campaign. The love revealed in the manger continues to bear fruit wherever someone makes room for another person’s needs.

This Christmas, we can see that growth in a home taking shape in Vietnam, hearts finding healing in Rwanda, and caregivers protecting mothers and babies in Uganda.

THE ROOTS OF BETHLEHEM

Making Room in Vietnam

Making Room in Vietnam

For the 192 sisters of the Association of Mary, Mother of Life, home is where their daily mission begins.

Their convent, built in 1964, has sheltered decades of prayer and service. Today, cracked walls, a leaking roof, and a sinking foundation threaten the safety of the community.

The sisters have already given much toward a new home. They sold property, gathered their savings, and began construction. The concrete frame now stands in Bac Ninh Province, but essential work remains.

Electrical systems, living spaces, and a chapel will help make the building a home where sisters can rest, study, pray, and prepare for another day of service.

Bethlehem reminds us how much a place of shelter matters. Helping these sisters complete their convent also supports the people who depend on their care.

A gift reaches beyond the walls it helps build.

A Shoot of Hope in Rwanda

A Shoot of Hope in Rwanda

Some growth begins with the chance to heal.

More than three decades after the 1994 genocide, Rwanda’s suffering continues to affect families, parishes, and those called to serve them. Priests accompany others through grief while carrying wounds of their own.

Fr. Dain Scherber, LC, travels from Côte d’Ivoire to Rwanda to lead four-day healing retreats for clergy. These gatherings offer time for prayer, reflection, and support, giving priests space to receive care themselves.

He also forms young leaders, training one young man and one young woman from each parish he serves to share Christ with their peers.

The promise of Isaiah feels close here. What has been wounded can still bear new life. Healing can strengthen a priest’s ministry, encourage a young leader, and reach a family waiting for hope.

Your generosity helps make room for that renewal.

Love Taking Root in Uganda

At Christmas, we contemplate a mother and her newborn. That closeness invites us to remember mothers preparing to give birth in communities where medical care is difficult to reach.

Through Safe Passages, Catholic World Mission supports training that helps local healthcare workers recognize and respond to obstetrical emergencies.

In Uganda, this work equips caregivers with practical skills and tools to care for mothers and babies when complications arise.

Behind every training session is someone who may one day need those skills: a mother in labor, a baby taking a first breath, a family waiting to welcome them home.

The spirit expressed in Twende Pamoja, “We go together,” connects this work to the whole campaign. Donors, mission partners, and local caregivers each have a part in helping care reach another family.

 Help Bethlehem's Love Keep Growing

A convent in Vietnam. Healing in Rwanda. Safer births in Uganda.

Each answers a different need, yet all grow from the same faith: every person is loved by God and deserves to be received with dignity.

This Christmas, you can help that love take root. Your gift can support a safer home for sisters, spiritual renewal for Church leaders, and care for mothers and newborns. Give to Catholic World Mission’s Beyond Bethlehem Christmas campaign today. Help the love born in the manger keep growing in the lives of others.
