The papal conclave, where cardinals gather to elect a new pope, is a momentous event that attracts attention from millions around the globe. As we move closer to the next conclave, it’s essential to understand the composition of the cardinalate in terms of nationality and age. These factors play a pivotal role in shaping the leadership of the Catholic Church. This article explores the current conclave list of cardinals, offering insights into their backgrounds and the potential implications for future leadership.
The Importance of Nationality
The nationality of cardinals significantly shapes their viewpoints and priorities within the Catholic Church. Historically, most cardinals came from Europe, particularly Italy. In fact, in the 20th century, about 55% of cardinals were of European descent. However, that landscape has changed dramatically recently.
Currently, around 20% of cardinals come from Africa, and an additional 20% hail from Latin America. This shift is a reflection of the growing Catholic population in those regions. For instance, the Catholic Church in Africa has grown by an impressive 73% in the last 30 years, while Latin America hosts nearly half of all Catholics worldwide. These demographic changes bring a diverse range of perspectives on doctrine, theology, and pastoral focus, influencing the conclave's electing process in significant ways.
The Average Age of Cardinals
The average age of cardinals is another essential factor to consider. Historically, this has been around 75 years. This trend influences their willingness to adopt transformative changes compared to a more conservative stance. For instance, cardinals under 70 may advocate more for modernization and engagement with contemporary issues, while those over 80 may prioritize tradition.
As of the most recent conclave, the average age of cardinal electors has dipped slightly to around 72 years, indicating a potential openness to change. However, about 45% of cardinals are still over the age of 75. This mix creates a dynamic where the experience of older cardinals might clash with the innovative ideas of younger ones, raising questions about the long-term vision of the Church.
Moreover, the age composition among cardinals can greatly affect their openness to reform. A mixture of younger, innovative thinkers and older, traditionalists may create a vital dialogue that paves the way for a robust and contemporary Catholic identity.
The Conclave

About 135 cardinals will gather in the Sistine Chapel to choose a new pontiff next week, according to the Vatican. Besides being the pope's main chapel, the Sistine Chapel has been the site of the conclave, the election that selects a new pope when there is a vacancy
The conclave that will elect the new pope is set to begin in a few days. Although the College of Cardinals consists of 252 members, only those under 80 years old are eligible to gather in the Sistine Chapel to vote for Pope Francis’ successor. The cardinals created by John Paul II now number only five, and those created by Benedict XVI, 22. To date, Francis has directly chosen 108 of the 135 men who could elect his successor.
