Empowering Parents to Lift Children Out of Poverty

ETHIOPIA

Children in the Diocese of Emdibir in Ethiopia suffer greatly from both material and spiritual poverty. Their parents work hard as subsistence farmers, but many own only one animal. It’s not enough to provide for their children. That puts young people at risk of human trafficking, underage marriage, and criminal activity, all of which are common in the nearby city.

Your generosity today can help support a poultry-rearing program that will empower 1,000 families to earn more income and build better lives. With your help, Catholic World Mission will provide high-quality fertilized eggs, a solar-powered incubator, feed and medication for chickens, and other resources so families throughout the diocese can raise chickens and eggs for food and for sale. These sweet children are trapped in a life of poverty, facing malnutrition and other dangers every day.
Will you help them? Something as simple as a single chicken — or even a single egg! — can be completely life-changing for families striving to shape brighter, more promising futures. It takes so little to make a big difference for some of the most vulnerable children in the world. Please come together with Catholic World Mission supporters across the country to lift up our brothers and sisters in Ethiopia and help them rise from poverty.
PROJECT UPDATES
Empowering Youth and Strengthening Communities Through Sustainable Livelihoods
Jun 2026

Through the generous support of donors, the “Hosanna in the Highest” project has successfully launched a poultry initiative that is transforming lives by addressing food insecurity and unemployment. Since March 2025, the project has empowered young people to become entrepreneurs, strengthened local food systems, and created sustainable economic opportunities rooted in dignity and community. This effort is already reducing migration pressures and helping families build a more stable future.
The project has directly engaged 20 unemployed youth across two parish sites, with a third parish and 23 priests also supported to begin poultry production, expanding the reach to entire communities. Major milestones include the establishment of poultry farms, the distribution of 600 pullets and essential supplies, and comprehensive training in entrepreneurship, life skills, and poultry management. These initiatives are fostering self-reliance, improving nutrition through access to affordable eggs, and promoting local economic growth.
Deeply grounded in the life of the Church, the project integrates faith into daily work by forming participants in stewardship, responsibility, and service to others. Taking place on parish lands and supported by Caritas, the initiative reflects Catholic social teaching by uplifting the dignity of work and the care for God’s creation. Through community collaboration, mentorship, and shared prayerful commitment, participants are living out their faith in action—building not only livelihoods but also a strong, faith-filled community.
