St. Agnes Catholic Church in the Wuye district of Abuja. Originally built in 2012 to accommodate 200 worshipers, the parish now welcomes over 1,000 attendees at weekly Mass

Despite Nigeria’s reputation as a global epicenter of violence and persecution against Christians, especially in the northern and Middle Belt regions where attacks by extremists are frequent, the Catholic faith remains vibrant and resilient. In Abuja, the nation’s capital, churches are overflowing with new parishioners attending Mass each week, a testament to a spiritual renewal that is inspiring courage, truth, and devotion among the people.

THE CHALLENGE

One remarkable example is St. Agnes Catholic Church in the Wuye district of Abuja. Originally built in 2012 to accommodate 200 worshipers, the parish now welcomes over 1,000 attendees at weekly Mass, with many standing outside or gathering under trees and in local huts due to limited space. Currently, our brothers and sisters in Wuye have no church hall. They often meet under the blazing sun or under makeshift shelters during the rainy season.

THE SOLUTION

The mission to construct St. Agnes began in 2006, with a generous land donation by Sir Gordian Chukwuemeka, a prominent local Knight.  Today, with the St. Brigid Knights of Columbus in Johns Creek, Georgia and Catholic World Mission working in partnership, we have launched a fundraising initiative to help complete St. Agnes Catholic Church. Catholic World Mission will match your gift dollar for dollar up to $50,000, and all donations will support the construction work at St. Agnes Catholic Church.

The new church will be home to up to 2,000  parishioners, led by Fr. Johnbosco Wakjissa.  Construction is already well underway. Thanks to local fundraising efforts within the Archdiocese of Abuja and a grant from Catholic World Mission, the foundation and walls have already been constructed.  This fundraiser will enable St. Agnes to finish the roof, so that the church can be consecrated and used, ensuring it remains a lasting symbol of courageous faith and commitment to Christ.

BUILDING UPON THE FOUNDATION OF THE APOSTLES

Ephesians 2:19-22

"“So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the capstone. Through Him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; in Him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.”

Your generous gift today will help finish St. Agnes Church
