Problem
  • The adverse effect of malnutrition include physical and developmental manifestations. Poor weight gain and slowing of linear growth occur.
  • Children who are chronically malnourished exhibit behavioral changes, including irritability, apathy and decreased social responsiveness, anxiety, and attention deficits.
  • Infants and young children who have malnutrition frequently demonstrate developmental delay or permanent cognitive deficits.
  • In developing countries, more than 50% of the 10 million deaths each year are either directly or indirectly secondary to malnutrition in children younger than 5 years old.

Solution
  • Comprehensive health screening and diagnosis.
  • Nutrition and education classes for parents and children.
  • Food, milk and vitamin supplements.

2008: The program expanded from food baskets to include an overall health program.

2008: The Manos Program started in Aguascalientes, Mexico supplying 25 families and 39 children from those families with weekly food baskets.

History of MANOS Nutrition Program

2008: This is the first time that we delivered supplements to Mano Amigo Students. Our study convinced us that we should replicate this project in additional Mano Amiga Schools.

It is proven that children who regularly eat breakfast have better test scores, better behavior and are less hyperactive than children who miss breakfast.
