Lending Their Voices
ASIDE FROM A FEW doughnuts, 13-year old Catherine Maher and 14-year-old Gary Gasse weren’t paid for their “voice” work for Catholic World Mission’s Glory Stories recordings.
But they say they gained more than money.
Catherine provided the voice for Blessed Imelda Lambertini. Gary provided the voice for Blessed Miguel de la Mora, a Knights of Columbus priest who was martyred during the Mexican persecution.
By doing so, both Catherine and Gary were able to contribute to Catholic World Mission’s Mano Amigo schools in Mexico.
Before playing the part of Blessed Imelda, Catherine read up on the saint.
“I knew the story line,” Catherine says. “I’ve known about her since I was 8.” She looked forward to playing the part as a way of helping the poor.
“They don’t look very happy and I feel sorry for them,” Catherine says. “This was a way that I could help.”
The recording took two hours, but it made an impact on Catherine’s life. She
says she’s curious about pursuing a career in radio.
Aspiring young filmmaker Gary was familiar with Catholic World Mission prior to playing the part of Blessed Miguel de la Mora. He had seen videos about
the apostolate’s work.
He wasn’t familiar, however, with the story of Blessed Miguel de la Mora.
“I knew of Miguel Pro but had never heard of Miguel de la Mora,” Gary says.
The recording was a family affair for the Gasses. Gary’s younger brother, Grant, played Miguel’s brother, Regino. His mother, Sandy, played the role of the boy’s mother.
“It’s a way to do something where the money is going to good purposes,” Gary adds, “as opposed to financial gain.”
Not only did Gary learn more about the Mexican priest martyrs, but he also enjoys the fact that, through his work, he is teaching others about the saint.
“Miguel showed a lot of courage,” Gary says. “It’s incredible the persecutions that the Mexicans went through. It’s nice to know that you’re teaching others about the saint.”
The volunteer work left a lasting impression on the two. Both Catherine
and Gary adopted the names of their radio saints as confirmation names.
