BRAZIL’S “MÃO AMIGA PERRICONE” PROJECT
MAMMA ROSA HOUSE

My  family didn’t have many opportunities.  Before coming to Casa Mamma Rosa,  I was surviving on just lollipops and chewing gum.  Neither did I knowt he damage this could cause my unborn baby.  I am very thankful for the support I have received at Casa Mamma Rosa.

The Problem
The breakdown of marriage and family life is the root of this problem – most of these girls come from fatherless households. As a result, many teenage girls turn to the streets, falling prey to predators and to all kinds of sinful behavior just to survive – from dealing drugs to prostitution. Girls who are abused start having their own children at 12 or 13 years of age. The cycle gets perpetuated. More children are thrust into a violent, drug-ridden society. Another generation grows up with no family life. Only 10% of children in poor, urban areas make it beyond 5th grade. It seems that there is little cause for hope.

The Solution
A Safe House for Pregnant Teenage Girls: The Alternative to Abortion
Integral social services provide health, education and character formation to break the cycle of poverty and degradation that destroys families.

Mamma Rosa House
Opened in November 2006, Mamma Rosa House provides pregnant teenagers witha safe haven. Here they will be cared for, given a complete secondary educationand learn parenting skills, Christian virtues and self-respect.

“This project helps young women discover their God-given dignity as persons.”

CASA MAMMA ROSA UPDATE
January 2008

Current programs at the Casa Mamma Rosa provide business-oriented training for young, troubled girls. New initiatives are being launched to provide specific programs to meet the needs of those teens that are pregnant and struggling. These exciting new initiatives will help the center to meet the needs of both of these groups of young ladies much more effectively and will work in conjunction with the Mano Amiga Health Clinic.

“Casa Mamma Rosa is helping to better the lives of thirty teenagers (ages fifteen to eighteen) and 100 women (eighteen years and older). These teens and women participate in the following activities: human formation courses (citizenship, self-esteem, home violence, and others), arts and crafts courses (painting, and others), and professional courses (secretarial, culinary, bakery and manicure). Finally, the teenagers have the opportunity to participate in communications and theater courses as well.”

-Lucia Saboya Salles, Executive Coordinator, Casa Mamma Rosa

In February, Mano Amiga Brazil will be growing from 80 students to 250 students total to meet the demand of the families in the community. Current classrooms will be filled to capacity (35 students) and this mid-year expansion includes opening new grades as well. Parental participation in school activity has greatly increased in the past year. In addition to this expansion, the school’s Health Clinic will also begin operation. Currently, construction is over 95% complete with a total investment of over $250,000. Providing health care to students and their families will also attract other residents to support the growth of the Mano Amiga School in their community and will help develop interest for additional Mao Amiga schools in more communities throughout the area.
