Student Profiles

Gabriela and Josmar are two of many students being given the opportunity to have a future by Mano Amiga school in Conkal. Through the generosity of Catholic World Mission donors, both sister and brother have something to look forward to. Gabby as she is known to her friends, and Josmar, live in extreme poverty with their mother. Their mother earns a living as a seamstress.

Gabby is described by her Science teacher as "an excellent and responsible student always looking to deliver the best she can in spite of her medical condition." Although Gabby is suffering from nephrotic syndrome (kidney related disease) her teachers said she remains a positive role model not only to other students but particularly to her younger brother Josmar. Gabby is currently in middle-school.

Josmar, who is 4 years old and currently in pre-school is a great example of what education and guidance can do to little children. Because his mother has to work all the time to support the family, Josmar has lacked necessary parental guidance and support. Thanks to the patience of dedicated Mano Amiga staff, Josmar has adjusted to adult supervision and is now enjoying his friends at school. Josmar is always cheerful, participates in class discussions and enjoys sports with his friends.

It is still a long way for both Gabby and Josmar but with generous assistance from caring people around the world we can give Gabby and Josmar a chance at a positive future. Mano Amiga Conkal school not only teaches the basics of education but instills in their students the value of having trust and faith in God.

Thank you for taking the time to read about Gabby and Josmar. With your contribution we can continue to support many other children in need.
